'Rosetta Disk' installation - The discovery of the Rosetta
Stone was a key moment in the studies of ancient Egypt
writing. The triple version of the same text (in Egyptian,
Demotic and Greek) was the decisive key for the comprehension
of hieroglyphics. Perhaps, in some unconscious way, those
who carved it had in mind, besides establishing a witness for
their contemporaries, to leave a key to future generations
for the understanding of their civilization. There have been
many initiatives in recent times for transmitting similar
testimonials to future, or different civilizations. Remarkable among
them for its symbolic value has been the space mission
in 2002 called 'Rosetta'. In the spacecraft was placed the
so-called 'Rosetta disk', a nickel disk of 7.62 cm in
diameter, containing in 13000 microincised pages of parallel versions of
Genesis in over a thousand languages of our planet. The
work proposed here has been inspired by these initiatives, in
an attemp of witnessing with the artist's eye their sense
of total communication.
The installation consists of 30 mirrors (disks of 20 cm
diameter) laid on the ground. On the surface of 15 of them there
is a
transparent film on which texts in various languages
are printed. The discs are arranged on the lawn in an area of about 100
sm.
